Large email lists
Our email service is capped at 200 emails per day per client account (not per email account) as this is what we define as normal business to business email. You could consider this like a broadband fair usage policy if you like and we had to implement this as some customers were not adhering to our guidelines. The cap is necessary to allow our primary web server to put full focus on its main processing job which is to deliver website availability for all of our customers, not large volume email management for just a few. Additionally, normal business email contains attachment no greater than 10mb per email. If you wish to send individual email larger than this you should consider uploading it to a file share and sending the link only. This is paying due consideration to your email receivers as there ISPs or incoming mail servers will also have certain key file size limits.
We define sending anything over 200 emails per day as a newsletter which our email service doesn’t support. If the sending of large blocks of email is not managed correctly, it can put quite a strain on any server as this type of setup is different to that of normal business email and requires a different mail server and setup. Newsletter software or services essentially ‘chunk up’ large blocks of email into smaller more manageable blocks which can be spread over hours or even days for very large newsletter lists - this dramatically reduced the impact on that server. Joomla mass mail facility or even using MS Outlook to send large emails does not have this ‘chunking up’ capability so will try to send all those emails at just one point in time. The result, more of the servers processing power is diverted to managing this process rather than its priority job of delivering uninterrupted website services.
For those customers that need to send large amounts of email per day or who want to start a dedicated newsletter service to hundreds or even thousands of people, there are two obvious options available to you.
1. Use the service provided by http://www.authsmtp.com/ which is priced from just £14 per year for 1000 messages / 100mb per month or £23 per year for 2000 messages / 200mb per month (other plans available). This essentially removes the sending part of the email from our servers to theirs. It’s very easy to setup and only requires a couple of changes either in your email client or the website – basically changing the SMTP settings.
2. Use a dedicated 3rd party newsletter service the benefits of which are numerous and far outweigh option 1. Above. If you are thinking of setting up and managing a regular newsletter service rather than just sending the odd large block of email, this is the better option for you. Please call us and we can advise on the best options available to you for this requirement.
