What's the difference between a Section and a Category?

A Category is a subset of a Section. Content Items belong to Categories; Categories belong to Sections. The only exception to this hierarchy is Static Content, which exists outside of the Sections > Categories structure. Think of static content as a piece of correspondance on your desk that you haven't filed away in a filing cabintet ( or in Joomla, a section or category)
